Head Start & Early Head Start
Welcome to
Schoharie
County Head
Start
Schoharie County Head Start SCHS recognizes that you are the most
important influence in your child's life. You are your child's
first educator. Head Start strives to enter into a partnership with
parents in all areas of services to you and your family. A
successful program calls for many people to work together sharing their
talents, knowledge, and energy so that children can receive the greatest
benefit. You are a valued and important part in your child's Head
Start experience. Parents are supported in their efforts to identify
their families goals and find community resources to achieve them.

Start Services
Head Start
services include; early childhood education, health and nutrition,
family services, special services for children with disabilities and
transportation to sites.
Health
services include vision, hearing, dental and developmental screenings
for children annually.
Parent Involvement
Working
with a Teacher or a Family Educator during home visits, sharing
activities with your child. Helping in playgroups, kitchen or the
classroom. Parents are asked to make a commitment for a certain
amount of time each month, it could be one day a week or one day a
month, depending on how much time you have. Teachers and Family
Educators will help you become familiar with the classroom routine and
will furnish you with information about supervising an area of the
classroom.
Volunteering
SCHS always appreciates parents
who can volunteer or help out in each classroom or playground.
Share your special talents with Head Start or help the teachers with
their day. You could offer to share an activity, such as a
craft or art project, a special recipe, or something from your child's
culture or ethnic background.
This is the way to become a part
of the Head Start team. Volunteer training is conducted
early in the fall. Outstanding volunteers are honored each Spring
for the number of hours of service....so be sure to sign in
each time you participate. By volunteering in the classroom,
many parents become staff members.
Parent Committees
Parent Committees meet monthly
at each site. Workshops and trainings are offered based on parents'
interests and requests. Teachers provide a monthly report about
the classroom curriculum and welcome parents' input into the planning
process.
PARP
In the spring of each
year SCHS holds "Parents As Reading Partners" (PARP) which offers an
opportunity to read with your children.
Fathers
Welcome
SCHS has a special "Guys
and
Kids
Night" throughout the year for the father or male figure in a child's life.
"Guys and Kids Nights" are
announced through the flyers
that
are sent home.
Parent
Nights
Parent Nights are held monthly or bi-monthly and
include dinners, fun activities like volleyball, and interesting
workshops on topics such as child discipline, etc..
Head Start Policy Council
In Head Start,
parents are involved in the decision making process for the program.
This process happens through a Policy Council. All centers have parent
representatives elected to the Policy Council each year. Parent
Committees elect representatives at their meetings.
Policy Council meets monthly to
help the agency administration make decisions. PC offers
in-put into agency services, budgets, grants and many other
decisions. Speak to your Family Advocate, Center Director or Rhonda
Wilty if you would like more information.
